Lathe Operator

Summary:

Setup and operate Poreba lathe. Perform initial test runs. Make adjustments as needed during operation. Use overhead crane to transfer stainless steel objects with weight in excess of 30,000 lbs. Pieces must be turned to tolerances +/- .003 in.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

  1. Set up and/or operate lathes to perform machining operations, such as turning, boring, threading, and facing, on metallic or nonmetallic work pieces according to specifications.

  2. Read blueprints or job order for specifications, such as dimensions and tolerances, tooling instructions on holding devices, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cuts, and cutting tools.

  3. Plan the operation for efficient use of tools and time

  4. Change worn out tools

  5. Perform routine machine maintenance

  6. Check to see that work piece meets specifications

  7. Direct the flow of coolant and remove chips

  8. Secure the work piece in the holding device

  9. Position and secure tools and tool holders to tool heads

  10. Adjust lathe controls, stops, and cams to set rotation speed, feed rates, and depth of cuts

  11. Mark reference lines on the work piece with a scribe (tool)

Requirements

  1. Employee must be able to work on own with minimal supervision and have the initiative to follow through on projects.

  2. Must be able to read blue prints and follow the drawings.

  3. Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as required.

  4. Must be familiar with all safety standards and utilize the required personal protective equipment at all times.

  5. When production varies, must be willing and able to work in any department as needed.

  6. Must be willing to work overtime as required

  7. Must be able to proficiently use the following tool/equipment:

    a. Lathe cutting tools

    b. Metal bar stock and plastics

    c. Dial indicators

    d. Metal castings

    e. Squares, protractors, and calipers

    f. Micrometers, templates

    g. Blueprints and hand tools

    h. Metal forgings
